Similarly, when prescribing an unfamiliar or unpleasant-tasting liquid for a scan, a doctor's choice of words can significantly impact a patient's willingness to comply. Rather than referring to it as "awful," a doctor might say, "We need you to drink this sugar-less yogurt/milk for the scan." This more neutral description can alleviate tension and promote cooperation.
Therapists are tasked with creating a supportive and comfortable environment for their patients. When explaining a potentially uncomfortable test, such as a lung test, it is crucial to choose words that inspire confidence and reduce anxiety. Instead of stating, "We are going to a very difficult test where you will be breathing less and uncomfortable," a therapist could say, "During the lung test, we'll be measuring your lung function. It may feel a bit different, but we'll guide you through it to ensure your comfort." This approach addresses the patient's concerns without exacerbating their discomfort.
The influence of language is not limited to healthcare settings; it extends to the workplace as well. Supervisors and managers must recognize the impact of their words on employees' morale and productivity. Instead of demanding results with phrases like "Get it done now," a more considerate approach could be, "It would be great if you could complete this task, and we can all enjoy an early lunch today." Acknowledging employees' humanity and mood swings fosters a more positive and cooperative work environment.
Same words re-phase causes a lot of side effects on the brain, and sometime being direct do no good. Here are some example that pass me by recently as I can recall. And usually this are the words that was delivered by people we have our complete trust towards at certain time.
A doctor was telling his patient that during the procedure the patient might be paralyse. This is what he says: “Any complication can cause the side effects” which he programs the patient to prepare for side effects than a recovery.
Another doctor was telling his patient to drink an “awful” liquid for a scan. He can make that situation less tense by saying “We need you to drink this “sugar-less yogurt / milk for the scan.” I believe that release a lot of pressure during the test.
A therapist was telling the patient, “we are going to a very difficult test where you will be breathe less and uncomfortable…..” (for a lung test) the patient went to see them because of discomfort.
I am not an English teacher or anything, but I can feel that effect the mood. And it really swings the mood low.
Be very careful same words not carefully structed can cause damage.
“words are mightier than a sword.” – now I see that true effects what it can do.
If you want to get things done quickly, don’t insist, instead “it will be nice if you can complete it and we can go lunch a bit earlier today.” We are all human like you do, doesn’t mean that the employee has no mood swing.
Note: Welfare of employee makes your job easy.
